To be
SER ou ESTAR = TO BE
“To be or not to be: that is the question.” Shakespeare.
Aqui estamos falando SOMENTE do verbo TO BE, ou seja, o verbo que em português pode ser traduzido como SER ou ESTAR, dependendo da frase. Veja os exemplos:
a) I am Lilli = Eu SOU a Lilli (não se traduz como “Eu ESTOU Lilli)
b) I am speaking = Eu ESTOU falando (claro, não seria “Eu sou falando”.)
Então, sempre que eu quiser falar algo com os verbos SER ou ESTAR, seja qual for a forma (estou, sou, estás, és, está, é, estamos, somos; estava, era, estavas, eras, estávamos, éramos, etc.), eu preciso usar o Verbo TO BE.
O verbo TO BE não varia tanto como no Português, em que nós conjugamos o verbo diferentemente para cada pessoa. No Inglês, o verbo TO BE tem três formas – am, is, are – no presente. Para saber com qual pessoa usar cada uma, veja as tabelas abaixo.
PRESENTE – VERBO SER/ESTAR
AFIRMATIVO:
I am = I’m
You are = You’re
He is, She is, It is = He’s, She’s, It’s
We are = We’re
You are = You’re
They are = They’re
NEGATIVO:
I am not = I’m not
You are not = You aren’t
He/she/it is not = He/she/it isn’tWe are not = We aren’t
You are not = You aren’t
They are not = They aren’t
I am not = I’m not
You are not = You aren’t
He/she/it is not = He/she/it isn’tWe are not = We aren’t
You are not = You aren’t
They are not = They aren’t
INTERROGATIVO:
Am I?
